Mick’s Five: Best Cafes, Pubs & More to Explore This Week!

Christmas is definitely in the air. Homes, shops and businesses have their decorations up and my credit card says I have entered the peak spending time for the year 💳️ 😆

If you want to kick the Christmas experience 🎅 up a level then check out my fourth recommendation on the free Christmas carols performances every night from 6 to 8pm starting today.

1. A local darling of the inner West ☕️

If you still have a penny or two after the Christmas pressie shopping then check out Rolling Penny in Newtown for you next brunch or a cocktail with your lunch.

“Da Roller” picks up a Google 4.7 star rating which is really a testament as to the efforts of the team behind the bean ☕️ The divorced eggs 🍳 are one of their specialties along with an espresso.

Open from 7:30 am and catering for breakfast, brunch and lunch, you can find them at 583A King Street, Newtown.

2. $2 oysters and brilliant cocktails! 🦪

OK, oysters are not my thing but I know allot of you love the little suckers 😆 and of course the cocktails are first class at the jazz infused speakeasy Eau De Vie.

Located at in the basement level off Wynyard Lane, 285 George Street, Sydney it is tucked away so don’t have to worry about the coppers when you are plotting the next social experiment 🧪 😉

The world famous $2 oysters are served Tuesday through Friday 5 to 6pm. So get off work early and don’t miss the fun.

Trading Tuesday to Saturday with staggered starting time, check out the website and make a booking to avoid disappointment.

3. Newtown Nights - very dandy at the Newtown Dendy Cinema 😃

A little bit of arthouse and a bit of mainstream cinema can be found at The Dendy Newtown.

Newtown Nights is the Dendy’s dirty little secret. They screen the retro movies each night from 9pm with a changing roster every week. And at $15 for those walking off the street and a further 25% off for Club Dendy members, it is the best bang for buck indoor nighttime entertainment in Sydney.

4. Get into the Christmas spirit - enjoy the carols at Customs House Square 👩‍🎤

Carols by the Christmas tree in Customs House Square - 6 to 8pm.

The fun kicks off today and runs all the way up until Christmas Eve. There are different performers every night.

No bookings necessary and it is free.

5. Whet your whistle and fill the tummy at The Dry Dock

OK, The Dry Dock is a hotel but the dining room is next level. The dining room is out back of the hotel and bookings are essential.

The menu is driven by quality produce and flavoured over fire from our Josper Charcoal Grill and Oven with an expansive wine, champagne, and cocktail list to match. Serving lunch and dinner daily, this beautiful room is flooded with natural light by day, warm and luminous by night. My favourite main dish is the Rare Breed Black Berkshire Crumbed Pork Cutlet.

Bookings are via the website, get in early to lock in your date.

Thanks for reading!
