Let’s Weekend! Your Guide to Sydney’s Best Spots to Eat & Play

Well the week has gone past fast, January is well and truly in the rear view mirror.

This week I have added a new category for your reading pleasure, shopping well more specifically farmers markets shopping.

Enjoy the sunshine 🌞

1. Discovery, need not journeying afar - a Japanese Peruvian Cuisine

Callao is a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian … who would have thunk it 😆

To describe what the menu and experience is all about I use the words of Callao “… an exceptional culinary experience in the form of Nikkei, a Japanese Peruvian cuisine. Fresh ingredients delivered through meticulous techniques and infused with subtle flavours. Culinary creations inspired by the natural elements”. I couldn’t have said it better myself 😁

The menu has three main options. If dining for lunch I would highly recommend one of the express lunch menu options which start at $49 pp plus beverages.

The dinner menu has the option of A La carte or Chef’s Selections (@ $119 per head). The A La Carte menu comprises lots of options captured under “Crudo & Snacks”, “Anrticuchos”, “Wood Fire”, “Steaks”, “Sides” and “Desserts”. I highly recommend the Skull Island tiger prawns and Shio chicken.

Closed on a Sunday but open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Lunch is midday to 3:00pm and dinner from 5:30 until late. Bookings are essential which can be done via the website or calling the team on 02 8529 8996.

2. Sydney’s oldest continually licensed hotel - yes it is in The Rocks

Established in 1841, The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel has seen allot over the years. If you have any interest in Sydney’s history then check out the their website, quite enlightening.

The current owners, since 1986, started brewing at the pub. Their beers have quite a reputation, Three Sheets Pale Ale is a beauty for a hot Summer afternoon.

The restaurant is on the first floor and serves modern Australian cuisine. Spaghetti of blue swimmer crab never lets me down. The restaurant trades Wednesday through Saturday - check the website for details and to make a booking.

The Lord Nelson accommodation is also very nice with Officers Rooms and Admiral Rooms available for the seafaring amongst us 😃

3. Massive harbour front screen, with a bar and restaurants 🎦

The Westpac OpenAir cinema is one of those must do experiences. You sit on seats constructed near Lady Macquarie’s Chair looking at movies on a giant screen with amazing harbour and city views beyond.

Some of the movies that are still to run (not all have tickets available) are; Kneecap, The Count of Monte Cristo, Emilia Perez, We Live in Time, The Complete Unknown, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Notting Hill and Babygirl.

There are three main dining options from amazing chefs such as Luke Nguyen, Danielle Alvarez and Scott McComas-Williams.

The season finishes on 18 February 2025 so check out the website for available sessions and book your tickets.

4. Giddy Up - Inglis Millennium Day 🐎

Anyone who is anyone is here (do you remember this jingle from the 90s) … Royal Randwick Racecourse is hosting the Inglis Millennium Day this Saturday.

Inglis Millennium Day signals the return of some of the topline horses and features the running of the $2 million Inglis Millennium for two-year-olds. There are ten races on the card with the last one running at 5:55pm. The Inglis Millennium is scheduled for 4:00pm.

The gates open at 11:30am and the racing gets underway at 12:30pm. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. Don’t forget anyone who is anyone is here … make sure you check out the Dress Code

5. Award-winning authentic Farmers Market 🍅

Not really feeling the love at your supermarket fruit and veggies section? We have the solution.

The Carriageworks Farmers Market at Eveleigh showcases the freshest seasonal produce and artisanal delights from local growers and producers across NSW. Curated by acclaimed chef Mike McEnearney, the Carriageworks Farmers Market follows a strict Market Charter to ensure quality and uphold its connection to growers and producers.

You can buy almost everything fresh for your pantry and fridge including; fruit, vegetables, baked goods, herbs and spices, sauces, condiments, seafood and the list goes on. There is also a range of ready to eats foods that are lip smacking fresh 👄

Open from 8:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday. Set your alarm clock to ensure you don’t miss out on the freshest of the huge lineup.

Have a great weekend.

Cheers and beers,

Mick
